GOVERNMENT POLLING RESULTS RELEASED

Saskatchewan residents embraced centennial celebrations and most people believe events and activities built pride in the province, according to polling released today.

The poll found that more than 70 per cent of Saskatchewan people participated in a centennial celebration of some kind. More than 75 per cent were satisfied with the overall centennial activities in the province and 92 per cent were satisfied with the events held during the official province-wide celebrations on the September long weekend. As well, 86 per cent felt it would be important to maintain the spirit of Saskatchewan's centennial in future years.

The poll was conducted in fall, 2005 by Arcas at a cost of $15,790, and is part of the government's release of polling results for the third quarter of 2005/2006. The research is used to develop, deliver and improve programs and services.

Another poll found that Saskatchewan people feel safety and security, a clean environment and access to medical care are the most important factors in choosing where to live. Cost of living and job security were also rated highly.

A poll commissioned by the Information Technology Office found that 79 per cent of Saskatchewan people have access to a computer for personal use at home, work or elsewhere. About 50 per cent of people surveyed preferred to access government services using the Internet. The figure is much higher among youth, with about 72 per cent preferring to access government services via the Internet.

Another poll found that more Saskatchewan people are watching programming on Saskatchewan Communications Network (SCN), with one-third of respondents indicating they watch SCN often or sometimes. Eighty-one per cent of viewers rate the programming as good or very good.

The total cost of all government polling for the third quarter of 2005/2006 is $74,715. The next release will be in April 2006 and will cover the period from January 1st to March 31st, 2006. Government polls can be found at http://www.executive.gov.sk.ca/polling.htm.
