News Release - April 28, 2005 NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING FOR WORKERS KILLED OR INJURED ON THE JOB
The names of 21 Saskatchewan workers who died as a result of workplace injuries or illnesses during the last year will be read into the official record of the provincial Legislature today.
Labour Minister Deb Higgins will read the names into Hansard as part of the observances marking the April 28th National Day of Mourning for Workers Killed or Injured on the Job. "The human toll from workplace injuries and illnesses is staggering," Higgins said. "Since 1999, more than 160 Saskatchewan men and women have died on the job and 86,000 more have been injured seriously enough to need time away from work." "April 28th is both a Day of Mourning and a day to renew our commitment to doing everything possible to prevent such tragedies," Higgins said. "Employers, workers and agencies committed to workplace safety must re-dedicate themselves to creating healthier and safer work conditions." -30- For More Information, Contact:
