2010 COUNCIL OF THE FEDERATION LITERACY AWARD PRESENTED

During a ceremony today at the Legislature, Deputy Premier and Finance Minister Ken Krawetz presented Kim Newlove with the 2010 Council of the Federation Literacy Award.

"On behalf of Premier Brad Wall, I am pleased to present Ms. Newlove with this prestigious award," Krawetz said. "Her outstanding dedication and commitment to advancing literacy in Saskatchewan is exemplary."

For nearly three decades, Kim Newlove has had an accomplished career in education. She has served Saskatoon Public Schools as a teacher, vice-principal, consultant, co-ordinator, researcher and superintendent of education.

Newlove has also been a leader in the establishment and delivery of the multi-year Literacy for Life initiative, which supports structured PreK-12 literacy programming and is designed to ensure all students are reading at, or above, grade level. Her commitment to literacy is instrumental as she continues to share the research and results of this and other initiatives with colleagues across the province and across the country.

Created by Canada's premiers, the Council of the Federation (COF) Literacy Award has been awarded since 2005 in each province and territory. The award recognizes the valuable contributions of Canadians in the field of literacy, including family, Aboriginal, health, workplace and community literacy. Each award recipient receives a COF Literacy Award medallion, as well as a certificate.
