News Release - May 13, 2010 WATERSHED AUTHORITY COMPLIES WITH FEDERAL ORDER AT LENORE LAKEIn compliance with an Inspector's Direction under the Federal Fisheries Act, the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority is taking measures to block the natural flow of saline water from Houghton Lake into Lenore Lake. The water flows in question are a natural occurrence resulting from several years of above-average precipitation and heavy rains in April and May this year. "This is a legal Order from the Government of Canada and we have complied," Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Watershed Authority Nancy Heppner said.
As a result of the Federal Direction, the Watershed Authority has blocked the flow to Lenore Lake, and is evaluating the need for construction of berms to prevent overflow into Waldsea Lake. This Order requires the Watershed Authority to turn a portion of Grid 777 into a dam which, under provincial legislation, requires that the Watershed Authority obtain land control to allow flooding. Blocking the natural flow of water into Lenore Lake will increase water levels in both Houghton and Deadmoose lakes, and result in additional flooding to surrounding agricultural land. There is a risk that water could flow into Waldsea Lake, flooding the Regional Park and cottages at that lake. Because the water cannot drain, the risk of further flooding next spring is increased. The Watershed Authority will continue to work with the Lenore Lake Planning Committee, which involves all local governments in the watershed, to find a long-term solution. -30- For more information, contact:
