PROVINCE TO MANDATE USE OF SAFE NEEDLES

Saskatchewan's health care workers will soon have a new tool to protect them from the risk of serious illnesses like HIV and Hepatitis B and C. Following consultations with health care unions and employers, the provincial government will enact occupational health and safety regulations mandating the use of Safety-Engineered Sharp Devices – or SESDs – in Saskatchewan.

"This province already has regulations for protection of health care workers that are among the strongest in Canada," Labour Minister Deb Higgins said. "This initiative will make Saskatchewan the first jurisdiction in the country to mandate the use of these engineered controls."

SESDs help protect workers against injuries and illnesses resulting from needlesticks. The scope and timing of the implementation will be determined through discussions with the interested parties.

"The protection of the health and safety of health care workers is our primary concern," Higgins said.
