News Release - August 7, 2009 SASK MLA DELEGATION ATTENDS MIDWESTERN LEGISLATIVE CONFERENCEA delegation of 12 Members of the Legislative Assembly representing both the Government and Opposition is attending the 64th annual meeting of the Midwestern Legislative Conference (MLC), August 9-12, in Overland Park, Kansas. The MLC is a regional association of legislators representing 11 Midwestern states including: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin. In 2000, Saskatchewan became the first ‘international affiliate' member of the MLC, followed by Ontario and Manitoba. MLC's goal is to foster regional intergovernmental cooperation through the joint consideration of common problems, the interchange of information and ideas, the sharing of knowledge and experience and, as appropriate, the pursuit of collaborative efforts. "With Saskatchewan being a trading province, it makes sense to pursue opportunities that foster relationships between our legislators and those in other jurisdictions," said Hon. Don Toth, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. "It's also an excellent learning opportunity for our Members and a way for them to see how other jurisdictions deal with some of the issues we also face in Saskatchewan." The annual meeting will include public policy roundtable discussions, plenary sessions and MLC committee meetings that focus on topics like:
