SASKATCHEWAN DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD PRESENTED

Industry and Resources Minister Eric Cline presented the Saskatchewan Distinguished Service Award to Hidetaka Nishiyama on behalf of Premier Lorne Calvert and the Government of Saskatchewan today.

The Distinguished Service Award recognizes non-residents of the province who have made outstanding contributions to Saskatchewan and to the development of the provincial economy and society.

As the chairman of the American Amateur Karate Federation and the president of the International Traditional Karate Federation, Master Nishiyama is considered one of the great masters and pioneers of Japanese Traditional Karate. For 30 years he has helped to develop the performance of athletes, coaches and officials in Saskatchewan, and many of his students have become top performers at national and international competitions. His dedication to Saskatchewan has ensured that this province plays a significant role in martial arts and Traditional Karate worldwide.

"Master Nishiyama's dedication to Traditional Karate and to Saskatchewan has not only enriched the lives of local athletes, but it has brought our province to the forefront in this sport on an international level," Cline said. "We are so fortunate to have close ties with Master Nishiyama and others, who have helped us to achieve success and broaden our horizons throughout the world."

Including today's recipient, 21 non-residents have received the Distinguished Service Award since its inception in 1997.
