News Release - June 30, 2005 PROVINCE TO REVIEW APPROACH TO DRUG ADDICTED YOUTH
The Government of Saskatchewan is launching a review focused on Saskatchewan's methods of helping addicted youth who are difficult to engage, resistant to voluntary treatment and considered at-risk of serious harm to themselves or others. The review will include exploring the use of secure care.
"Reviewing our approach to addicted youth at risk of serious harm, and involving key players before making any changes is the right way to go," Community Resources and Employment Minister Joanne Crofford said. "The issues, including secure care, are complex. They require careful consideration and consultation with stakeholders, including experts in the field. We also need to consider the valuable work that's already been undertaken in other provinces, and the upcoming report of the Legislative Secretary to the Premier on Substance Abuse." Conducted by the Departments of Community Resources and Employment, Health, Justice and Corrections and Public Safety, the review will involve targeted stakeholders within each sector, including First Nations and Métis representatives and youth themselves. The scope of the review will include completing a needs assessment, examining and researching what works best and what other provinces are doing, assessing policy and legal implications, and analyzing current and proposed legislation. The end result will be an action plan including recommendations. "I recognize the urgency of this matter," Crofford added. "We must ensure we have the facilities and resources available to meet any changes we make in our approach. Protecting children and youth at risk, in co-operation with their families and caregivers, remains our number one priority." Government will release an action plan in the fall. NOTE: Minister Crofford will be available for a scrum with media at 10:45 a.m. today in front of her office at the Legislature (Room 348). -30- For More Information, Contact:
