SASKATCHEWAN CONTINUES TO SHOW STRONG CONSTRUCTION GROWTH

2008 Continues the Saskatchewan Growth Trend

Saskatchewan's economic momentum continues to start 2008, according to a new report released today by Statistics Canada.

In the first month of the new year, the overall value of building permits in Saskatchewan was up 20.4 per cent compared to January of 2007, while the value of residential building permits was up 40.7 per cent. Saskatchewan ranks second among the 10 provinces in both categories.

Enterprise and Innovation Minister Lyle Stewart said the first figures for 2008 show that Saskatchewan continues to sustain strong economic growth and that Saskatchewan people are benefiting from the growing economy.

"These are more than just numbers," Stewart said. "Forty per cent growth in the residential construction sector shows that Saskatchewan people are confident and optimistic about their future in this province and that more Saskatchewan families are choosing to build new homes."

Additionally, Statistics Canada's survey of investment intentions released last week shows that public and private investment in Saskatchewan this year will grow by 18 per cent to a record $12.3 billion.

"We continue to see signs of a strong and growing economy with confidence in the future," Stewart said. "The new government is committed to sustaining positive economic growth and ensuring that all Saskatchewan people enjoy the benefits of growth."
