BLACKSTRAP SKI HILL MAY OPEN THIS SEASON

The ski hill at Blackstrap Provincial Park is one step closer to opening this winter.

A contracted operator is in place to oversee the management and operations at the ski hill for the upcoming season. Saskatchewan Environment has also purchased a snow groomer and issued a tender for two new lifts, to service the beginner and intermediate runs and the snowboard park.

"The department has a plan in place and staff are working hard to get a portion of the hill up and running for some of the winter season," Environment Minister John Nilson said. "Groomed trails are already available for cross country skiers and the parking lot is cleared. Having high-quality outdoor recreational activities available in our provincial parks is good for today's families and part of building an even better future here for our young people."

If all the necessary equipment can be purchased and installed on time, the hill could open by February 1. The investment required to open the hill this year includes $373,000 for the operating agreement; $371,000 for purchasing the two lifts and the snow groomer; and $50,000 for rental of buildings, equipment and associated operating expenses.

Blackstrap ski hill has considerable future recreational potential based on its characteristics and its close proximity to Saskatoon. The department will continue to work on the development of long-term options for the revitalization of this provincial park ski hill.
