News Release - April 18, 2007 ESTABLISHING THE ROYAL SASKATCHEWAN MUSEUM ACT, 2007The Government of Saskatchewan has tabled an act that enshrines the purpose and mandate of the Royal Saskatchewan Museum in legislation. “The Royal Saskatchewan Museum contributes to the province’s heritage, education, scientific knowledge and tourism and is an important asset and institution for the Government of Saskatchewan,” Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Glenn Hagel said. “The museum’s collections and expertise are used to promote social and scientific change and understanding for the people of our province, as well as the larger global audience.” Important roles of the museum include the stewardship of artifacts and other collections that speak to the province’s heritage, and scientific research on those collections. This Act also responds to concerns raised by First Nations people about the access and care of culturally sensitive artifacts that are held in museum collections. “First Nations Elders and members of the First Nations cultural community have been and will continue to work with the staff of the museum to establish a policy in regard to repatriation of sacred and culturally sensitive artifacts in the museum’s collection,” Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations Vice Chief Lyle Whitefish said. The Royal Saskatchewan Museum is fully funded by the provincial government as part of its commitment to give the people of Saskatchewan an appreciation and understanding of our natural and cultural heritage. The museum has served the province of Saskatchewan for over 100 years. -30- For more information, contact: Penny Pedersen |
