SASKPOWER SHAND GREENHOUSE CUSTOMER SEEDLING DISTRIBUTION BEGINS

SaskPower encourages Saskatchewan residents to do their part to help protect our environment by planting a tree this spring. From May 5th-7th, individuals can get a free Scotch Pine seedling by visiting their local SaskPower Customer Service office.

"The SaskPower Shand Greenhouse seedling programs play a significant role in SaskPower's corporate-wide commitment to environmental stewardship," Minister responsible for SaskPower Frank Quennell said. "I encourage all Saskatchewan residents to 'think green' this spring, and plant a Shand Greenhouse seedling."

"A large part of what we do at the greenhouse involves educating the public about climate change and our overall impact on the environment," SaskPower Shand Greenhouse manager Marty Lelliott said. "Distributing these seedlings across the province provides another opportunity to support that message."

Trees help address the issue of climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide and filtering pollution. An average-sized tree absorbs approximately 4.5 kilograms of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere each year.

The SaskPower Shand Greenhouse operates on waste heat from the nearby Shand Power Station in Estevan. Since opening in 1991, the greenhouse has grown and distributed millions of seedlings – over 450,000 annually. In addition to the customer seedling distribution program, the greenhouse provides free seedlings for environmental, wildlife and conservation projects throughout the province, and also offers the Energy & Our Environment presentation to elementary school students.
