CELEBRATE FAMILY LITERACY

Education Minister Ken Krawetz will proclaim Family Literacy Day on January 27. He encourages all Saskatchewan families to join in family literacy celebrations that are taking place in communities beginning Sunday and happening throughout the province this week.

"Children first develop language and literacy skills in their family settings so family members play a significant role in literacy development for children," Krawetz said. "Tomorrow's success begins with all our children today. I encourage families to engage in fun learning activities every day and to work toward a common goal where all children grow up to be lifelong readers and learners. By building literacy skills, we will secure our province's future."

The Government of Saskatchewan has committed $2.5 million over the past year to support local literacy programs and services. This includes $400,000 for the delivery of community based family literacy programs and services and $500,000 toward the distribution of family literacy resources that help children and families to develop an appreciation and enjoyment for reading and learning together.

"Our literacy partners play a vital role by providing programs and services that assist families to develop essential literacy skills," Krawetz said. "Increasing literacy levels of Saskatchewan citizens is key to Saskatchewan's economic and social well-being."

Research indicates that reading to children more than once a day has a substantial positive effect on their future academic skills. It also indicates that children with early exposure to books and reading are better at performing mathematical tasks.

"In addition to supporting family literacy, our government is working with local school boards, the business community and community-based organizations to build Saskatchewan's literacy levels," Krawetz said. "Our platform also includes enhancing entrepreneurial and career education in Saskatchewan schools. Literacy development makes it possible for people to participate successfully in the labour market and to create a better quality of life for themselves and their families."
