LABOUR DAY MESSAGE

The upcoming Labour Day holiday is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the great achievements, past and present, of working men and women in Saskatchewan and across Canada.

"On Labour Day we say a special 'thank you' to all the women and men whose work has built a strong, prosperous democracy envied around the world," Labour Minister Deb Higgins said.

All Canadians reap the benefits that working men and women generate, and communities in every province are better places to live because of their efforts. The United Nations consistently ranks Canada among the top nations in the world in which to live and raise a family.

"We would not have health care, schools, clean water and good roads, or any of the goods and services that improve the quality of life without the dedicated effort of working people. Saskatchewan's working people have a well-earned reputation for dedication, productivity and the ability to innovate."

Labour Day was proclaimed a national holiday by Parliament on July 23rd, 1894. While the workplace has changed radically since the 19th century, and continues to change at an ever accelerating pace, working men and women in Saskatchewan and Canada have distinguished themselves by their ability to adapt to change without losing the values that help build strong communities.

"On behalf of the people and Government of Saskatchewan, it is my honour and privilege to extend heartfelt thanks to all those whose labour has helped to make Canada and Saskatchewan great places to call home," Higgins said.
