NEW REGULATIONS WILL PROTECT HEARING AID CONSUMERS

Saskatchewan residents in need of hearing assistance will be assured of qualified and professional services due to provincial legislation coming into effect on March 1st.

The Hearing Aid Sales and Service Act will require private hearing aid dealers to be licensed by Saskatchewan Health, and will ensure that hearing aid services are performed by qualified staff. The Act will also enable Saskatchewan Health to address consumer complaints by taking action against a business if necessary, including suspending a licence or ordering product refunds or repairs.

"Our government developed this legislation and regulation in order to protect our most vulnerable citizens," Health Minister John Nilson said. "While we know that most dealers are ethical and reasonable in their pricing and practices, we needed to respond to concerns we were hearing about the marketing practices of some private hearing aid dealers."

Of further benefit to consumers is a three working day period to reflect upon their order and cancel if desired. In addition, consumers will receive a copy of their hearing test so they may choose the outlet from which they wish to make a purchase.

Consumers who have a concern or complaint about the marketing or sales practices of a hearing aid retailer can contact Saskatchewan Health.

Saskatchewan Health and Saskatchewan Justice worked closely with groups such as the Saskatchewan Hearing Instrument Practitioners Society and the Saskatchewan Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists in developing the Hearing Aid Sales and Services Act and its regulations.

Seniors and any Saskatchewan residents who feel they may benefit from a hearing test and/or purchase of a hearing aid are advised to check with local dealers to ensure they are licensed by Saskatchewan Health.
