PREMIER CALVERT DRIVES SUPPORT FOR PROVINCIAL ENERGY AND CLIMATE CHANGE STRATEGY

Premier Lorne Calvert today took an important step toward achieving the government's objectives under the recently released Saskatchewan Energy and Climate Change strategy, by replacing his vehicle with a more energy efficient model.

"Saskatchewan is working hard to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions," Calvert said. "We want to live greener, build greener and drive greener. The government now meets its energy needs with 36 per cent green energy, and has made great strides in building energy-efficient buildings. Now we want to focus using green vehicles to lessen our environmental impact while driving."

The Premier's previous vehicle was due for replacement, providing an opportunity for the Central Vehicle Agency (CVA) of Saskatchewan Property Management to provide him with the Saturn Aura Hybrid sedan from General Motors. As identified in the Saskatchewan Energy and Climate Change Strategy, SPM is committed to purchasing only vehicles that are fuel efficient, alternative-fuel, Ethanol E-85 flex-fuel (capable of using 85 per cent ethanol blend fuel) or hybrid in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The car joins 13 hybrid vehicles, and 440 E-85 vehicles.

Premier Calvert will be using the vehicle on a road trip beginning today with stops including Biggar, the Battlefords, Lloydminster and Meadow Lake; as well as visits to the Red Pheasant, Onion Lake and Thunderchild First Nations.

The Saturn Aura Hybrid is expected to achieve a 20 per cent improvement in fuel economy in the city and on the highway. The engine automatically shuts down when the car is at a standstill and the car recharges the battery when coasting and braking.
