72 HOURS – ARE YOU PREPARED?

Corrections, Public Safety and Policing Minister D.F. (Yogi) Huyghebaert led Karen Marchuck's Grade 4 class at Jack Mackenzie School in building their own basic emergency preparedness kit. The event launched Emergency Preparedness Week which runs from May 2 to 8.

"It's important for every resident to prepare to be on their own for the first 72 hours in an emergency," Huyghebaert said. "It's up to each of us to learn about and prepare for all types of emergencies."

The students toured the provincial Emergency Operations Center (EOC) of the Ministry of Corrections, Public Safety and Policing. The EOC is the facility where all operations involving a provincial emergency response are coordinated.

In Saskatchewan, common emergencies stem from natural disasters such as floods, tornadoes and forest fires. A basic emergency kit should include bottled water, non-perishable food, battery-operated flashlight, manual can-opener and a first aid kit.
