CELEBRATE EARTH DAY IN SASKATCHEWAN

Saskatchewan's Environment Minister invites everyone to join in celebrating International Earth Day.

"By working with the people, communities and industry of Saskatchewan we have established successful programs to minimize pollution, improve waste management and reuse valuable resources," Saskatchewan Environment Minister David Forbes said. "However there is still more to be accomplished. I am confident that by working together we can find solutions and make the changes needed to protect our planet."

The province is doing several things to help protect the environment. The Representative Areas Network protects five million hectares of important natural ecosystems. The province is working with communities on managing their water, sewage and solid waste systems. Abandoned industrial sites are being cleaned up; recycling is on the increase and new recycling programs for used electronic equipment and waste paint are being considered.

"We are committed to growing a green and prosperous economy. That means using our natural resources in a way that not only meets the needs of today but also the needs of tomorrow," Forbes said. "But you will notice that none of those initiatives would or could be successful without the commitment the people of Saskatchewan have to the province's environment."

Forbes also says Earth Day is a time to act by turning off a light, composting yard waste, joining a car pool, cleaning a stream, planting a tree or riding the bus.
