SASKSMART INNOVATIONS FUND ANNOUNCED

A new 900 thousand dollar fund that will help address issues around literacy in Saskatchewan is now in place. The SaskSmart Innovations Fund will assist communities with the design and implementation of comprehensive Community Literacy Plans for the workplace and for families.

Two types of funding are available – assistance for the development of a plan and funding for plans that will be implemented in 2006-07.

"Improving literacy levels makes it possible for people to take full advantage of Saskatchewan's economic growth," Minister responsible for Literacy Deb Higgins said. "The SaskSmart Innovations Fund was created to engage communities in addressing local literacy needs that will build an even better future for communities, businesses, and families right here in Saskatchewan."

The SaskSmart Innovations Fund is available from the recently-established Saskatchewan Literacy Commission that provides a systematic approach to the development of basic literacy and essential skills needed for work, learning, and life for all Saskatchewan citizens.

"By providing funding for Community Literacy Plans through the SaskSmart Innovations Fund, communities will be able to lay out a shared vision for literacy," Saskatchewan Literacy Commissioner Dr. Margaret Lipp said. "It will provide a system for members of a community to take ownership of local literacy needs, and implement a community-based response to those needs by marshalling local resources, engaging local volunteers and providing literacy services and supports."

Application deadline for submission of Community Literacy Plan proposals is May 31st, 2006. For further information on the SaskSmart Innovations Fund, call (306) 787-2514 or visit the website at www.SaskSmart.ca.
