CROP REPORT FOR THE WEEK ENDING MAY 11, 2008

Saskatchewan farmers now have 25 per cent of the 2008 crop planted, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture's weekly crop report.

The five-year (2003-07) average is 20 per cent of the crop planted at this time. Seeding is most advanced in the southeast where 46 per cent of the crop has been planted, and least advanced in the northwest where seven per cent has been planted. Early-seeded crops are emerging in southern areas. Some producers in the southern and central areas of the province are delaying seeding oilseeds until rain is received.

Overall, topsoil moisture conditions on crop land deteriorated slightly from last week. According to crop reporters, 65 per cent of crop land has adequate topsoil moisture and 35 per cent is short or very short of topsoil moisture. For hay and pasture land, reporters show 53 per cent with adequate moisture and 47 per cent with short or very short topsoil moisture. Some areas received rain Sunday night, which continued into Monday morning. Information pertaining to this rainfall will be included in next week's report.

Cool temperatures continue to slow fieldwork and crop germination, as well as grass and hay growth.
