News Release - May 9, 2011 FIRE FIGHTERS RECEIVE INCREASED PROTECTIONS UNDER THE WORKERS’ COMPENSATION AMENDMENT ACT 2011Legislation expanding workers' compensation protection for full-time, professional fire fighters was introduced today in the Saskatchewan Legislature. Under The Workers' Compensation Amendment Act, 2011, esophageal cancer is added to the list of cancers presumed to be occupational diseases for Saskatchewan's full-time, professional fire fighters under the Act, unless there is evidence to the contrary. "This amendment reflects the government's intention to ensure that the workers' compensation system reflects the inherent risks associated with the toxins, carcinogens and cancer-causing agents that Saskatchewan's professional fire fighters face as part of their daily jobs," Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Minister Don Morgan said. Once the legislation is passed, regulations will be amended to establish the minimum employment requirement period. "The Government of Saskatchewan and the Workers' Compensation Board are committed to ensuring the provision of the most accountable and responsive workers' compensation system possible," Morgan said. No incremental costs to the Workers Compensation Board are expected with this legislation, since esophageal cancer claims are already accepted by the board if there is sufficient evidence establishing a causal link to the work performed. There are close to 700 full-time, professional fire fighters in Saskatchewan. -30- For more information, contact:
