OCTOBER MANUFACTURING SALES SHOW CONTINUED GROWTH

According to a report on October manufacturing sales released by Statistics Canada today, Saskatchewan has the second highest percentage growth rate among the provinces, up 16 per cent year-over-year on a seasonally unadjusted basis.

The report shows October sales totalled $1.03 billion, a 16 per cent increase, and well ahead of the national average increase of 1.7 per cent. Only Newfoundland and Labrador posted a higher percentage increase, up 60.3 per cent.

"Saskatchewan's manufacturing sector is still showing signs of very positive growth in comparison with what is happening in other provinces," Enterprise and Innovation Minister Lyle Stewart said. "Manufacturing is an important part of the mix in our economy, and the fact we are doing more than just holding our own during these challenging times is a testament to the innovation and diversity within this sector."

In the first 10 months of 2008, manufacturing sales were up by 20.5 per cent, when compared to the same period in 2007. This was the third highest percentage increase among the provinces, and the highest in the west.
