IMPROVING HIGHWAY 55 NORTH OF BIG RIVER

Construction is underway on Highway 55 north of Big River.

Resurfacing is taking place on 3.7 km of Highway 55, beginning just north of its junction with Main Street in Big River. In addition, an intersection treatment and truck pull-off will be constructed and paved within the project limits. The contractor is G.W. Construction Ltd. of Buchanan.

The public is advised that there will be an occasional disruption of traffic during the construction period. This $960,000 project will employ 43 full-time workers and should be complete in late June.

"This resurfacing project is part of our commitment to building better highways," Highways and Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "The work on Highway 55 will improve safety and support regional economic development in the Big River area, demonstrating once again that transportation is a priority for the Government of Saskatchewan."

Other projects this summer on Highway 55 include 8.4 km of resurfacing east and west of Love and 13.6 km of resurfacing in sections west of Green Lake to east of the Meadow Lake Sawmill.

Over the past three years, the province has invested $900 million in Saskatchewan's transportation network, improving 1,000 km of paved highways, upgrading 750 km of rural highways, and twinning 172 km on Highways 1 and 16.

This year's budget provides an additional $294.8 million to improve another 740 km of major highways and 30 bridges, and twin 53 km on Highways 1 and 16 this construction season.

Remember to slow to 60 km/hr when passing through the construction Orange Zone, and watch for construction workers, signs and heavy equipment. For more information about construction in your area, view the provincial project map at: www.highways.gov.sk.ca.
