News Release - August 30, 2007 AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROJECT CREATED IN LA LOCHEThe northern Village of La Loche today celebrated the opening of a new affordable housing project featuring 12 new rental units for low-income families. "We are continuing to make affordable housing a priority," Community Resources Minister Kevin Yates said. "These 12 new households demonstrate how we are working with partners to help create and fund housing opportunities in this province. Most importantly, through our HomeFirst strategy, we are helping to make life better for vulnerable Saskatchewan families and ensuring that they get the quality, affordable housing they need and deserve." The development involved the construction of 12 four-bedroom suites (six duplexes). The development will enhance the existing portfolio of affordable housing stock (226 units) managed in the community by the La Loche Non-profit Housing Corporation. The total capital cost is approximately $1.5 million, or $125,000 per unit. Of this amount, approximately 60 per cent was directed to northern contractors who participated in the construction of the project. The funding was provided through the province's HomeFirst housing strategy which was established in 2004 to help low and moderate-income Saskatchewan citizens acquire safe homes that promote health, independence, security and dignity and that enhance the social and economic well-being of communities. -30- For more information, contact: Linda Saliken |
