MOOSOMIN HEALTH FACILITY PROJECT MOVING FORWARD

The Saskatchewan government confirmed today its commitment to preparations for construction of the Moosomin Integrated Health Facility with a sod-turning ceremony at the planned site of the new building.

The 85-bed health facility will replace the Moosomin Hospital and the Eastern Saskatchewan Pioneer Lodge, as well as bringing community health services for the area together under one roof.

"Moosomin's new health facility will be the focal point for health services in this area for decades to come," Health Minister John Nilson told the audience at the site. "When completed, this building will provide a sustainable base for excellence in acute care and long-term care for Moosomin and area. One of our government's top priorities is to improve the quality of health services and access to care, while ensuring our health system is sustainable into the future."

The province will pay 65 per cent of the estimated $21 million cost for the facility. Local groups have so far raised $6.7 million toward construction costs, plus equipment and furnishings. The high-profile fundraising campaign has included two local hockey games challenging the Guinness Book of World Records record for the longest hockey game ever played.

"It's great to be here today for the sod turning for the new health care facility for Moosomin and area," Regina Qu'Appelle Regional Health Authority chairperson Murray Knuttila said.

"Everyone is looking forward to having all our services under one roof. It will be easier for staff to provide services, and more accessible and convenient for clients and patients," Knuttila said.

Preliminary work will take place at the site this fall, with construction set to begin in the spring. The building should be completed by 2007.
