Premier Brad Wall announced today that Briercrest College and Seminary (Briercrest) has received authorization to provide a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities.

“Briercrest is known across Canada for its academic excellence,” Wall said.  “We are pleased today to recognize that by authorizing the college to provide a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities, this is the first time this has been done outside the province’s two universities.”

Authorization was provided through The Degree Authorization Act and The Degree Authorization Regulations, which came into force in the fall of 2012.  Prior to this, only the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Regina had the authority to grant degrees, other than theological degrees, in the province.

The newly created Saskatchewan Higher Education Quality Assurance Board reviews all applications for degree granting authority before they are approved.

“We’re absolutely delighted to have arrived at this moment and this day,” Briercrest President Dwayne Uglem said.  “We’re thrilled to be witnessing this historic moment both for Briercrest and Saskatchewan higher education.”

Briercrest will be able to provide a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities effective July, 2013.  The authorization will be reviewed formally in five years.

Briercrest College and Seminary is located in the town of Caronport, Saskatchewan, just 15 minutes west of the city of Moose Jaw.
