PREMIER EXPRESSES CONDOLENCES ON DEATH OF ALBERTA LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR

Premier Lorne Calvert today expressed condolences on the death of the Honourable Lois Hole, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, on January 5th.

"On behalf of the government and people of Saskatchewan, I extend to the family of Lois Hole and the people of Alberta our sincere condolences on the passing of Mrs. Hole," Calvert said. "It is sad indeed that the lieutenant governor of our sister province should be taken from us at the beginning of our joint centennial year."

The premier noted that Mrs. Hole had many connections with Saskatchewan. She was born in Buchanan, Saskatchewan, and moved to Edmonton in her early teens. She and her late husband had a life-long involvement in agriculture and Mrs. Hole became a nationally-known author and expert on gardening. She was a frequent visitor to Regina as a member of the board of directors of Farm Credit Canada, whose head office is located in the Saskatchewan capital. She was well known for her support of health care, education, libraries and the arts.

"It was typical of Lois Hole," Calvert said, "that when she learned of the campaign to raise funds for the Saskatchewan Government House Centennial project, she promptly sent a personal donation. Alberta's loss on her passing is also felt very much in Saskatchewan."
