PROVINCE RECOGNIZES WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY

Health Minister John Nilson is recognizing May 31st, World No Tobacco Day, by congratulating the five Saskatchewan municipalities that passed smoke-free bylaws prior to the introduction of provincial smoke-free legislation earlier this month.

"On May 12th, I introduced The Tobacco Control Amendment Act which calls for 100 per cent smoke-free public places by January 1st, 2005," Nilson said. "On World No Tobacco Day, I want to thank everyone who helped make this happen, particularly the cities that lead the way with smoke-free bylaws of their own."

Certificates of recognition for an outstanding contribution to tobacco reduction have been sent by Minister Nilson to the cities of Humboldt, Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, Saskatoon and Yorkton.

"Our government is committed to building safe and healthy lives, families, neighbourhoods and communities across the province," Nilson said. "Making Saskatchewan smoke-free is one important way we can achieve this. Together with these Saskatchewan municipalities we are helping to protect the health of our citizens from the devastating health effects of second-hand smoke."
