CELEBRATING REGIONAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITIES

The strength of grassroots business and community development is being celebrated during Regional Economic Development Authority (REDA) Week in Saskatchewan, February 9-15.

There are 28 REDAs in the province, developing and promoting the economic strengths of their regions. They represent collaboration among local governments, businesses, co-operatives, and First Nations.

"REDAs successfully promote local economic opportunities and support the work of entrepreneurs seeking to build businesses in Saskatchewan," Industry and Resources Minister Eldon Lautermilch said. "They are shining examples of the partnerships that are building our economy."

The REDA program was established in 1993. Under the program, the government provides each REDA with cost-shared operating funding, to a maximum of $60,000 per year. REDAs can also access additional funding for youth employment, joint initiatives with other REDAs, and regional infrastructure projects.

"REDAs offer our communities the opportunity to create jobs based on the strengths of their regions," Lautermilch said. "REDAs enable projects that create jobs in many sectors – tourism, technology, manufacturing, and agri-value to name a few."

REDAs from across the province will participate in the fourth annual Connectivity Partnership Conference in Regina February 12-14, which will bring them together with representatives of the Saskatchewan Economic Developers Association (SEDA) and Community Futures Development Corporations.

The conference offers REDAs and their partner organizations the opportunity to provide member training opportunities and activities, explore community economic development issues and opportunities, as well as present Economic Development Awards of Excellence. During this year's REDA Week, the Prince Albert REDA and Entrepreneurs 2000 REDA will be presented with 10th year anniversary certificates.
