MINISTER RESPONDS TO FEDERAL ANNOUNCEMENT

Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris today commended the Government of Canada for its announcement of additional funding to support First Nations University learners.

"I have strongly encouraged the federal government to invest in the partnership," Norris said. "With today's announcement Minister Strahl has indicated his renewed support for First Nations learners and post-secondary education."

Today's announcement by the Government of Canada complements the May 3, 2010 announcement of $5.2 million in provincial funding for First Nations University learners through an agreement between First Nations University of Canada (FNUniv), the University of Regina (U of R) and Meyers Norris Penny Limited (MNP).

"I believe today's announcement reflects the steps that Chief Guy Lonechild, First Nations University, and its partners and stakeholders have taken to address the governance and accountability concerns that led to the withdrawal of funding earlier this year," Norris said. "Much progress has been made and I look forward to working with the partners to ensure this progress continues."
