REVITALIZING HIGHWAY 13

Construction is underway or set to begin on five projects to improve Highway 13 near Pontiex, Assiniboia, Horizon, Ogema and Trossachs.

"In the past few years, Highway 13 has experienced a dramatic increase in heavy truck traffic, leading to rough sections in several areas," Highways and Transportation Minister Mark Wartman said. "These projects, worth a total of $10.5 million, will improve the Red Coat Trail, enhance this key transportation corridor in southern Saskatchewan and support regional economic and social development."

The following construction projects are currently underway or will begin shortly:

· Grading and Surfacing 9.9 km from Aneriod to east of Pontiex access. Project is worth $2.6 million, employs 35 full-time workers and should be complete by early August.

· Surfacing 14 km from Horizon to the Viceroy access. Project is worth $2 million, employs 38 full-time workers and should be complete by the end of July.

· Grading and Surfacing 19.6 km from Ogema to Horizon. Project is worth $2.3 million, employs 40 full-time workers and is nearing completion.

· Resurfacing 15.6 km from Assiniboia to Limerick. Project is worth $1.95 million, employs 38 full-time workers and should be complete by the end of July.

· Resurfacing 9.3 km from Trossachs west to the Junction of Highway 28. Project is worth $1.65 million, will employ 38 full-time workers and should be completed by early August.

All but the resurfacing projects are cost-shared through the federal/provincial Prairie Grain Roads Program.

"These projects help us achieve a safe, modern and efficient transportation system that supports economic growth and social well-being across our province," Wartman said.

Last construction season, a total of 90 km of Highway 13 was resurfaced or upgraded near Arcola, Pangman, Ogema, Lafleche and Hazenmore.

The government has committed $296.2 million to building better highways in 2003-2004. More than 700 km of highways will be reconstructed and paved this year.
