NEW LITERACY AWARD FOR SASKATCHEWAN

Premier Lorne Calvert today announced a new award, designed to recognize outstanding achievement, innovation and excellence in literacy in Saskatchewan.

Beginning in 2005, 13 Council of the Federation Literacy medallions will be presented annually, one for each province and territory. In Saskatchewan, the 2005 award will recognize an individual adult from the province who has demonstrated exceptional achievement in improving their literacy skills.

"Literacy skills are crucial for individuals to fully participate in society," Calvert said. "Governments, organizations and individuals all have a role and responsibility in developing a literate learning society. This year's award will recognize the courage and commitment it takes for adults to improve their literacy skills."

The Council of the Federation Literacy Award was created in partnership with all of Canada's premiers to increase awareness of literacy achievements and programming across the country. Over the years this award will recognize a range of achievements in the literacy field, including family, aboriginal, health, workplace and community literacy and will be given to recognize the accomplishments of educators, volunteers, learners, community organizations and businesses.

"Literacy skills are essential to creating a strong economy, a skilled workforce and a healthy province," Learning Minister Andrew Thomson said. "In addition to rewarding outstanding achievement, this award will inspire others to acquire the skills needed for them to reap the benefits of Saskatchewan's growing economy and become active and engaged members of our society."

"Increased literacy has a tremendous impact on the lives of learners and their families. As such, we are delighted that the first Council of the Federation Literacy Award will recognize a learner who has demonstrated significant achievements in learning," Saskatchewan Literacy Network Executive Director Debbie Griffith said.

A selection committee, made up of representatives from Saskatchewan's literacy community, Executive Council and Saskatchewan Learning, will choose one nominee to receive this award. Premier Calvert will present the award later this year.
