MORE AFFORDABLE RENTAL HOUSING FOR PRINCE ALBERT

Six more low-income Prince Albert families will have access to quality, affordable housing with the announcement today of a new affordable rental housing project in that city.

The $720,000 project was made possible by $492,000 in funding from the Government of Saskatchewan as part of the HomeFirst Rental Development Program.

"The creation of more quality, affordable housing is one of the ways we are building a better future for the people of Saskatchewan," Community Resources Minister Kevin Yates said. "The vision of HomeFirst, our provincial housing strategy, is that all citizens have homes that promote health, dignity, security and independence, and that enhance the social and economic well-being of our communities."

The rest of the funding for this project is being provided by River Bank Development Corporation, a non-profit organization, in the form of mortgage financing, cash and in-kind contributions.

"The mandate of River Bank Development Corporation is to promote social and economic development in Prince Albert's low-income community," River Bank manager Brian Howell said. "Over the past 10 years, we've worked with the province on a number of affordable housing projects on behalf of the people of Prince Albert, and we look forward to continuing that partnership in the years ahead."

The project involves the development of six semi-detached two-storey units in an inner-city neighbourhood in Prince Albert. Construction has commenced on four of the units, and will soon begin on the remaining two units.

The four-bedroom rental units will be made available to six low-income larger families in Prince Albert. The units will be located close to schools and other community amenities, and will meet all of the energy requirements of the HomeFirst rental option.
