SASKATCHEWAN VOLUNTEERS HONOURED

Today Lieutenant Governor Dr. Gordon L. Barnhart presented nine citizens with the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal at Government House in Regina. The Medal recognizes outstanding volunteer service or exceptional community involvement.

"The nine extraordinary volunteers we celebrate today define leadership as service, and have chosen to lead by example," Barnhart said. "I congratulate them on this well-deserved honour and I thank them for their remarkable contributions to our province."

The 2010 recipients are:
• Lexie Culham, Cabri
• David Delday, Kindersley
• Maurice Filson, Regina
• Helen Hellegards-MacFarlane, Kamsack
• Krishan Kapila, Regina
• Emil Leibel, Balgonie
• Jean Mahoney, Regina
• Betty Lou Palko, Hudson Bay
• Albin Zubot, Burstall

Recipients are selected by the Saskatchewan Honours Advisory Council from nominations submitted by the public. Including the nine new recipients, the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal has been presented to 139 outstanding individuals since 1995.

Saskatchewan continues to have one of the highest rates of volunteerism in Canada.
