News Release - November 18, 2009 NEW LEGISLATION INTRODUCED TODAY PROTECTS HUNTING, FISHING AND TRAPPINGHunting, fishing and trapping are an integral part of this province's heritage. New legislation introduced today will ensure that in Saskatchewan, hunting, fishing and trapping are part of our way of life, now and in the future. "The act recognizes hunting, fishing and trapping as protected activities under the law in Saskatchewan," Environment Minister Nancy Heppner said. "The Government of Saskatchewan is very proud to celebrate the importance of these activities by designating November 15 of each year as Hunting, Fishing and Trapping Heritage Day." For generations, Saskatchewan residents have pursued these activities for food, for recreation and for commercial and cultural purposes. The Hunting, Fishing and Trapping Heritage Act acknowledges the importance these activities have in our society. The new legislation does not deter or alter an Aboriginal person's constitutional right to hunt, fish or trap. "We applaud this milestone in the recognition and protection of these heritage activities that provide so many Saskatchewan residents with quality of life and healthy lifestyle benefits," Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation Executive Director Darrell Crabbe said. "We would like to commend Minister Heppner for her support and efforts by sponsoring this very important legislation, and urge all MLAs to support this fundamental initiative." -30- For more information, contact:
