PREBBLE TO EXAMINE RENEWABLE ENERGY DEVELOPMENT AND CONSERVATION IN SASKATCHEWAN

Premier Lorne Calvert has appointed Saskatoon Greystone MLA Peter Prebble as Legislative Secretary for Renewable Energy Development and Conservation. Prebble will lead an examination into Saskatchewan's options for the development of renewable energy sources and energy conservation programs, and develop an action plan for the coming decades.

"Our vision is that by the third decade of this century, one-third of the energy needs of Saskatchewan people will be met by renewable energy sources, and we will lead the country in energy conservation practices," Calvert said. "I am pleased that Peter Prebble has agreed to work on this important initiative. His experience and insight into environmental issues will be invaluable in developing a blueprint that will help us achieve our vision."

Prebble will examine a range of issues, including:

• ways to enhance and expand Saskatchewan's existing initiatives with respect to renewable energy sources;

• possible new initiatives, including energy conservation programs; and

• leading edge policies and practices used in other jurisdictions, and how they might be applied in Saskatchewan.

"I'm very excited about this opportunity to lead an examination into renewable energy development and conservation," Prebble said. "Our future, and the future of generations to come, depends very much on our stewardship of the environment, particularly with regard to energy. It is incumbent on us to develop and enhance safe, cost-effective, renewable energy sources and at the same time to pursue cost-effective methods of reducing consumption and conserving energy."

Crown Investments Corporation (CIC) will provide research and administrative support to Prebble during his examination. Prebble will present short-term recommendations to the Premier by October 2006. A final report, which will include a blueprint for the medium and long terms, will be presented by June of 2007.
