NEW INTEGRATED HEALTH FACILITY FOR MAIDSTONE

The government is moving ahead with plans for a new integrated health care centre in Maidstone, as part of The Action Plan for Saskatchewan Health Care launched in December 2001.

Health Minister John Nilson announced the province is providing $700,000 to plan a new integrated health care centre in Maidstone.

The new centre will replace the Pine Island Lodge long-term care facility. This will require the expansion of the existing Maidstone Hospital to include a range of community programs and services, including long-term care and home care.

"The new facility builds on the government's commitment in The Action Plan for Saskatchewan Health Care to improve the quality of health services and access to care for all Saskatchewan residents," Health Minister John Nilson said. "In fulfilling that commitment we are investing $61 million over the next two years for new and upgraded health care facilities across the province."

Nilson said the project also supports the government's commitment to improve primary health care delivery. "Once completed, the new facility will improve the quality of health care by delivering many services under one roof, improving coordination of care and operating efficiency."

Saskatchewan Health is working closely with the Prairie North Regional Health Authority to finalize the scope, cost and design of the project.

"The financial commitment from the Government of Saskatchewan is a positive step forward for the people in the region," Prairie North Regional Health Authority Board Chairperson Bonnie O'Grady said. "With the commitment to move ahead with planning, the local community now has a clearer vision of how their health care needs will be met in the years ahead."

The provincial government will provide funding for 65 per cent of the approved project cost, with the remainder provided through local fundraising efforts. Facilities of this type typically cost about $6 million.
