SUMMER Y'S RECREATION PROGRAM BENEFITS YOUTH

Regina's Kitchener Community School and the YMCA will launch this year's Summer Y's children and youth recreation program with the help of $3,000 from the provincial government through the Community Initiatives Fund (CIF).

Regina Elphinstone MLA Warren McCall presented the cheque to the Kitchener Community School Council today on behalf of Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joanne Crofford.

"Summer Y's provides an opportunity for children and youth to get involved and benefit from recreation and summer fun activities," McCall said. "Saskatchewan's wide open future is reflected in the goals and objectives of projects such as this which help to sustain our quality of life and our vibrant communities."

The Summer Y's is a seven-week recreation program that includes structured activities such as basketball, volleyball, soccer, floor hockey, arts and crafts, movie nights, special events and weekly barbeques. The program targets at-risk children and youth ages 8 to 18.

Summer Y's makes it possible for entire communities to contribute to youth development. The program will ensure that children and youth are provided with the opportunity to get active during the summer months.

"The Summer Y's program gives young people a chance to share experiences, expand friendships and have fun," Kitchener Community School Co-ordinator Marilyn Fazakas said. "The funding from the provincial government will help to ensure that the participating children and youth have an unforgettable summer."

The CIF was established by the provincial government in 1997 to return a portion of casino profits to communities. Since its inception, the fund has provided more than 2,300 community groups with a total of almost $13.5 million.
