MINISTERS RESPONSIBLE FOR EDUCATION MEET IN TORONTO TO DISCUSS ABORIGINAL EDUCATION

Education Minister and Deputy Premier Ken Krawetz and Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris are in Toronto Monday, February 25. The Ministers will be attending a meeting of provincial and territorial ministers responsible for education to discuss progress and suggested next steps regarding the Aboriginal Education Action Plan.

"In Saskatchewan we have a young and growing First Nations and Métis population," Krawetz said. "The learning success of our young people is vital to securing the future of our province. Our participation in this meeting and the action plan reflects the provincial government's commitment to strengthening partnerships and focusing on student achievement for all students."

"Closing the education and skills training gap between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal learners is critical to the social inclusion and prosperity of all Canadians," Norris said. "We are committed to ensuring that all people have access to the post-secondary education and skills training that are vital to participating in our economy."

Saskatchewan is co-ordinating the development and advancement of the Aboriginal Education Action Plan. The Ministry of Education is working closely with the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC) to continue to strategically move forward and advance their work regarding Aboriginal education.

Krawetz will lead a discussion with the Ministers about creative ways to enhance action toward closing the gap between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal learners including improving student achievement and improving outcomes.

"Our children hold the promise of tomorrow," Krawetz said. "We need to continue to build on our successes and recognize that we are in a position to make a significant impact in their life-long learning journey."
