VICTIMS OF CRIME AWARENESS WEEK

Victims of Crime Awareness Week in Saskatchewan, which takes place from April 13 to 19, is an opportunity to let victims of crime know they are not alone.

"For more than 15 years the people working in Victims Services programs across our province have been there to help victims find their way," Justice Minister and Attorney General Don Morgan said. "Victims Services programs play an important role to ensure that victims of violent crime receive information and support immediately after a crime, and throughout the criminal justice process."

This year's theme is "Finding the Way Together". Activities and events held during the week are intended to raise awareness that victims of violent crime and traumatic events can feel lost, and unable to cope with what has happened to them. Many need help finding their way in the criminal justice system.

More than 300 Victims Services volunteers continue to donate 20,000 hours of time annually to assist thousands of victims of crime through police-based victims services programs. Since this program began 16 years ago, a total of 61 volunteers have dedicated at least 10 years to this important work. This year, 17 volunteers celebrate their 10th anniversary as a Victim Support Worker or Board member with Victims Services programs in the province, and five volunteers celebrate their 15th anniversary.

During Victims of Crime Awareness Week, all Victims Services volunteers will be honoured. Those celebrating their 10- and 15-year anniversaries have been invited to a luncheon at the Legislative Building on April 14, where Minister Morgan will present them with commemorative gifts.
