MINISTER COMMENDS RACING INDUSTRY ON SUCCESSFUL SEASON

Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) Dan D'Autremont will be on hand Saturday night at the 48th running of the Saskatchewan Derby in Saskatoon to recognize the completion of a successful thoroughbred racing season in Saskatchewan.

"Interest in horse racing continues to grow in the province," D'Autremont said. "I would like to congratulate the board and management of the Saskatoon Prairieland Park Corporation, as well as the owners, trainers, jockeys and track employees on another great season."

The provincial government, through SLGA, provided $1,015,000 in operating and facility grants for thoroughbred racing at Marquis Downs this season.

"These investments are a small part of our government's overall commitment to fostering vibrant, lively communities in our province," D'Autremont said. "Horse racing at Marquis Downs plays an integral role in the entertainment industry in Saskatoon, making the city an attractive place to live and work."

The race, which takes place at Marquis Downs in Saskatoon's Prairieland Park, can be seen live Saturday night from 9:30-10 p.m. on Saskatchewan Global TV stations. Top three-year-old horses from Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan will compete for the $25,000 purse.

Prairieland Park Corporation CEO Mark Regier, said this year's thoroughbred races featured more horses and more races than in previous years and the provincial handle has remained strong.

"What we've tried to do is provide a great entertainment option for people not just in Saskatoon, but from around the province," Regier said. "We're appreciative of the grant support that we have received from the government and we're looking forward to an even better season next year."
