SASKATCHEWAN PEOPLE EXTEND SUPPORT FOR TSUNAMI VICTIMS

On December 31st, 2004, Premier Lorne Calvert expressed condolences on behalf of the province and people of Saskatchewan to those affected by the massive earthquake and tsunami that have claimed so many lives in southern Asia and eastern Africa.

At that time, the Government of Saskatchewan announced it would contribute $1 million for both short-term disaster relief and medium-term reconstruction assistance. This contribution augments the thousands of individual donations being made to disaster relief by people across the province, whose support to the victims of this disaster has been so prompt and generous.

The people of Saskatchewan are encouraged to continue to donate what they can to the many agencies that are working on relief and reconstruction in the affected countries.

A book of condolence to families and friends of the victims has been placed at the main entrance of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building in Regina for signing by members of the public. The book will remain until January 14th and can be signed between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. People unable to sign the book in person can send their message of condolence in one of the following ways:

Copies of the book of condolence will be provided to the Embassies of the nations affected by the disaster.

On Saturday, January 8th, at 11 a.m. Saskatchewan time (12:00 noon EST), Canadian Heritage is holding a national ceremony of commemoration in honour of the victims. Saskatchewan residents will be able to watch the ceremony live on a number of national television networks. Saskatchewan people are encouraged to take a few minutes out of their day to pay respect to the many victims and family members who have been and continue to be affected by this tragedy.

In solidarity with Canada and other countries around the world, flags on Saskatchewan Government buildings will continue to fly at half-mast until end of day, January 8th, in honour of the victims.
