News Release - April 20, 2005 FREE PARK ENTRY FOR LABOUR DAY LONG WEEKEND
Saskatchewan Parks is offering all visitors to provincial parks free park entry during the Labour Day long weekend as part of its Centennial celebration plans.
"Saskatchewan people take a great deal of pride in our provincial parks," Environment Minister David Forbes said. "This initiative is a great opportunity for everyone to visit a park during our centennial birthday weekend. People who've never visited a park before will have the chance to see all they have to offer, and experienced parks-goers can try out a new park for the first time." Providing free park entry over the Labour Day long weekend is expected to increase visitation by 10 to 20 per cent for that weekend. Besides the social benefit the general public will receive, other positive benefits include increased business for the private operators in provincial parks and adjacent communities. "This is a very positive initiative for us," Kenosee Inn Resort Hotel co-owner Ed Fahlman said. "This is one of the nicest times of the year to visit a park, when everything is so beautiful and facilities like the golf course are in peak condition. It's an added bonus to provide free entry, so people can experience this time of year first-hand and perhaps plan a return visit." "Once you've experienced our beautiful provincial parks, you'll be hooked - just like the 2.4 million people who visit our parks each year," Forbes said. All other park fees, such as camping and firewood permits, will still apply. Throughout the centennial year, Saskatchewan Environment will continue to host a variety of special events and initiatives in celebration of the province's centennial.
