IMPROVING REGIONAL WASTE MANAGEMENT

The West Yellowhead Waste Resource Authority (WYWRA) based in North Battleford will receive $182,000 from the province's Centenary Fund to assist it in establishing its regional waste management system.

The authority represents several municipalities in the area and has been working for four years to develop the project. The funding is provided on a 50 per cent cost share with the authority and will be used to help close eight smaller landfills, establish transfer stations, purchase waste collection bins and develop recycling depots.

"Regional waste management systems allow communities to share capital costs and develop more sustainable waste management practices," Environment Minister Buckley Belanger said. "They promote and encourage waste reduction and recycling and thereby protect and preserve the environment."

"Regional waste management services helps communities reduce their waste management costs and protect the environment", the chairman of WYWRA and Wilkie Mayor Wally Lorenz said.

Saskatchewan Environment is encouraging the establishment of regional waste authorities. So far the provincial government has contributed $1.675 million to six authorities across the province from its Centenary Fund. Last year the WYWRA received $158,000 from the Centenary Fund.
