PREMIER PROCLAIMS NAVY DAY IN SASKATCHEWAN

Today Premier Brad Wall recognized the contributions of the Canadian Navy by proclaiming May 4, 2010, as Navy Day in Saskatchewan.

"It is with great pride that I sign this proclamation on the centennial anniversary of the creation of the Canadian Navy," Wall said. "This is just a small gesture to mark this historic milestone and demonstrate our appreciation for 100 years of naval service in protection and defence of the freedoms and rights we enjoy in Canada."

The proclamation was made following a Naval parade at the Legislature presided over by Lieutenant Governor Gordon Barnhart. The parade was comprised of sailors from the Naval Reserve Divisions HMCS Unicorn in Saskatoon and HMCS Queen in Regina, veterans, and Royal Canadian Sea and Navy League Cadets from across Saskatchewan.

Both HMCS Unicorn and HMCS Queen serve as shore-based training and recruiting centres for naval reservists. Saskatchewan naval reservists have served with every part of Canada's Navy, including operations in Gulf War and peacekeeping missions in Cyprus and Bosnia.

Events are being held throughout the province and the country to celebrate the Navy's contributions to maritime coastal defence, port security, and guidance to commercial shipping, and to highlight their connections to communities large and small across Canada.
