2010 LEGACY FUND GROWS WITH HIGHER THAN EXPECTED FOOD SALES

Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Dustin Duncan today announced an additional $43,647 will go into the Saskatchewan 2010 Legacy Fund. The additional money is profit from the sale of Saskatchewan products, from bison burgers to Saskatoon Berry tarts, at the Saskatchewan Pavilion during the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. This brings the total going into the Legacy Fund to $445,147.

The Saskatchewan 2010 Legacy Fund was created when corporate and city partners joined with the province to invest in the highly successful Saskatchewan Pavilion during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Half of the money the partners contributed was used to create the Legacy Fund.

"This fund will benefit Saskatchewan young people into the future by supporting culture, amateur sport and recreation in the province," Duncan said.

Duncan took the opportunity to visit and participate in an arts activity with students from Regina's Marion McVeety School. Arts and cultural activities are an example of the type of programs the Legacy Fund was created to support.

The Creative Kids Program, a recipient of the Legacy Fund, is designed to reduce social and financial barriers for children and youth, 19 and under, who would like to participate in arts and cultural activities. Parents can receive up to $750 per year from the Creative Kids Program to help with the costs associated with participation.

"All children should have the opportunity to learn and grow though active participation in quality arts and cultural programs," SaskCulture President Peter England said. "But sometimes there are barriers to accessibility. Thanks to generous support from the Legacy Fund for Creative Kids, even more Saskatchewan children will be able to get involved and pursue their individual talents and interests in arts and culture."

The Legacy Fund will also help support athletics and leadership development programs available through KidSport, Future Best and Take The Lead.

"It is great to see how our partnerships at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games created such a great opportunity to market our province as the place for investment, tourism and immigration to an international audience and, at the same time, create this legacy fund to benefit future generations by enhancing access to culture and sport programs," Duncan said.
