PREMIER PRESENTS PROVINCIAL GIFT TO THE QUEEN

Premier Lorne Calvert presented Her Majesty The Queen with gifts on behalf of the province during a Centennial community luncheon held in her honour in Lumsden today.

The gifts include a new scholarship, The Queen Elizabeth the Second Centennial Aboriginal Scholarship. This scholarship, worth $20,000 annually, will be awarded to a First Nations or Métis student graduating from the First Nations University of Canada to pursue post-graduate studies in any field at any Saskatchewan university.

"It will be an enduring sign of the historic link between the Crown and the First Nations peoples of our province," Calvert said. "It will also remind us of the importance that our Sovereign and her family have always attached to youth."

As well, starting next year, the Province will double the annual value of the Queen Elizabeth the Second Scholarship in Parliamentary Studies, from $10,000 to $20,000. This scholarship was established in 1987, for Her Majesty's last visit. Several recipients of this scholarship were in attendance at the luncheon.

Saskatchewan's third gift to The Queen is the first copy of a new book, Provincial Heritage Properties: Celebrating Saskatchewan's Centennial.

"This book tells the story of Saskatchewan's heritage through its buildings and is another link with our past and a legacy for our future," Calvert said.

The provincial luncheon was held in the Lumsden Sports Centre. The town is also celebrating its centennial this year.
