STUDENTS PROMOTE ENERGY CONSERVATION

A grade two student from Regina is the Saskatchewan winner of a calendar contest promoting energy conservation. The contest received 423 entries from students across the province.

The 2004 National Energy and the Environment Calendar Contest is an initiative of Natural Resources Canada and is co-sponsored in the province by Saskatchewan Learning and Saskatchewan Industry and Resources. The annual contest uses winning artwork from students aged 6 to 13 in each province and territory to promote a theme of climate change action through wise energy use.

"This contest is one way to raise awareness among students about the importance of conserving energy and using our energy resources more efficiently," Industry and Resources Minister Eric Cline said. "As young people start to learn about the importance of environmental stewardship, they're more likely to see this as an important issue as they grow."

Eight-year old David Kreps from Dieppe School in Regina is Saskatchewan's contest winner. David's winning picture, "Don't Take the Car, Use a Bike!" will appear in the calendar when it is published later this year. Dieppe School also receives $250 for its resource centre.

The runner-up, Kelsey Dionne, is a 13-year-old grade seven student from Rivier Academy in Prince Albert. Her entry is called, "Be Smart, Conserve Energy!"

The students received small prize packages including sweatshirts, books, and laminated copies of their winning submissions.
