2012 COUNCIL OF THE FEDERATION LITERACY AWARD RECIPIENT ANNOUNCED

The recipient of the eighth annual Council of the Federation (COF) Literacy Award is Gordon Li of Regina. Mr. Li was nominated by the Regina Literacy Network for his personal literacy accomplishments since emigrating from China and for his commitment to supporting others who are learning English as an additional language.

"Gordon Li's deep personal commitment to literacy and his ongoing work in the community exemplifies the spirit of the Council of the Federation Literacy Award," Premier Brad Wall said. "Through his efforts as a literacy volunteer, Mr. Li has made Saskatchewan a more welcoming place and enriched the lives of many people. I commend him for his commitment to our community."

Mr. Li has attended literacy programs through the Regina Public Library, Regina Open Door Society and the University of Regina. He uses his experience as a new Canadian, now many years ago, to encourage English language learners by sharing his story and insights. He also supports and promotes literacy as a long-time volunteer with the Saskatchewan Literacy Network and the Regina Literacy Network.

Created by Canada's premiers in 2005, the COF Literacy Award recognizes individuals for outstanding achievements and contributions to the field of literacy. A recipient is selected annually in each province and territory, and each award recipient receives a COF Literacy Award medallion, a certificate and, for the first time this year, a bursary.

The 2012 COF Literacy Award for Saskatchewan recognizes the outstanding achievements of a literacy learner who has demonstrated courage and commitment in improving his literacy skills and achieving his learning goals, and who has also helped to advance literacy in Saskatchewan.

The Council of the Federation Literacy Award will be presented to Mr. Li at a ceremony later this year.
