GOVERNMENT FUNDS NEW HIGH SCHOOL FOR HUMBOLDT

The community of Humboldt celebrated today when Education Minister Ken Krawetz announced over $15 million in government funding for a new high school. The Horizon School Division and the Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools will provide the remaining funds for the project, which is expected to cost nearly $25 million. The new school will continue to be jointly operated by the two divisions.

"This investment exemplifies the benefits of the Ready for Growth initiative that is helping us grow our economy, improve our quality of life, and take pride in where we live. The new high school will provide an improved learning environment that supports student achievement," Krawetz said.

"The construction of the new Humboldt Collegiate Institute will have many long term benefits for our students, our staff, our partners and for the community as a whole," Horizon School Division board chair Eldon Vanden Bossche said.

"We are excited that our students will soon have a modern new high school," Greater Saskatoon Catholic Board of Education chair Jim Carriere said. "We have been working closely with the community to ensure that this facility reflects their vision. The new Humboldt Collegiate Institute will be a centre of learning and of community, where each and every student will have the opportunity to achieve and succeed."

The new Humboldt Collegiate Institute is in the planning stage with a preliminary design underway. Options for using the current high school facility are being discussed with the Carlton Trail Regional College and community partners. The new high school project is expected to break ground in 2009.

The project is part of the Government of Saskatchewan's Ready for Growth commitment of $117.6 million for Kindergarten to Grade 12 school capital including nine major capital and 36 block funding projects. An additional eight major capital projects were also announced last May, including over $60 million for six projects that will begin in 2009.
